Getting started

What is free and what is Pro

Short answer: the theme, the app shell, the CLI, the docs and every component except one are free and MIT. The exception is the record workflow. This page is the full breakdown, and it starts with the part we got wrong.

⚠️ What changed on 17 August 2026

This page used to say “nothing free moves to Pro”, and then one thing did. RecordView, the server-backed record workflow, is now a Pro component. You are owed the blunt version rather than a quietly reworded page, so: that was a promise, we have not kept it, and the paragraph that made it is below with a line through it.

💡 What is not affected

Every version already published stays MIT permanently, which is a fact about npm rather than a policy of ours. RecordView up to 1.66 is MIT forever, it cannot be withdrawn, and if you have it in a lockfile today nothing about your project changes. The free package also gains DataTable, so the free tier still has a table. 21 things are free, 9 are Pro.

Every version already published is MIT permanently, so anything you have installed stays yours under the licence it shipped with, forever, including RecordView up to 1.66. What changes is where new work goes.

Which table do I want?

The split is a table against a data workflow, not a good version and a crippled one. DataTable is free: hand it an array and it sorts, searches, paginates, selects rows and hides columns, entirely in the browser. RecordView is Pro: it talks to your server on every query, carries typed per-field filters with async options, bulk actions, an inline create and edit form, and CSV, JSON and Excel both directions.

If your data is a few hundred rows you already hold, you will never need the paid one. If your data is two hundred thousand rows in Postgres, you cannot use the free one. That is the whole line, and it is one you can check against your own project rather than against a feature grid.

Then what else is Pro?

  • Premium blocks the free demo deliberately does not include: billing and subscriptions, roles and permissions, an audit log, an inbox.
  • The record workflow for Vue and Svelte. The free DataTable is planned for both; parity with RecordView is months of work per framework, and that is the part Pro funds.
  • Priority support and a commercial licence, for teams whose procurement wants an invoice and a named counterparty. MIT already permits commercial use, so what you would buy is our time and a signature, not permission.

The paragraph that used to be here

Left in rather than deleted, because a promise you can no longer find is worse than one you can read and judge:

Nothing free moves to Pro. This is the part worth being blunt about, because plenty of projects have done the opposite. Everything on the free list above stays free. Pro can only ever be additive, and if that ever changes you will be able to keep using the version you have, under the licence it shipped with.

The last clause of it is the only part that was ever ours to guarantee, and it still holds: you can keep using the version you have, under the licence it shipped with. The rest was a promise about our own future behaviour, and it turned out to be one we could not keep once the library had to pay for itself. What we will not do is make it twice.

Which CSS framework does free cover?

Tailwind CSS, in every framework we publish. React, Next.js, Vue, Angular, plain HTML and Laravel all have a free Tailwind edition, and the split above applies inside each of them unchanged.

Bootstrap and Bulma are Pro only. Not a component-by-component split like the table above: the whole port is Pro, because the free tier exists to show you the design system and one stylesheet does that. If you are on Bootstrap or Bulma, there is no free edition to try and the demo is the thing to look at instead.
